My throat fucking burns and my body is dying to finish off the dae on the ground but I force my body to stay upright. I’m more interested in the way that Selene and Raziel are regarding each other.

Everyone is watching the silent conversation, and I’m shocked by the way my chest tightens as I take it in. I’m pretty sure I know what they are thinking – the only reason that would stop their anger is one that I have been trying vehemently to ignore. It can’t be can it?

But then Raziel lifts his head, his gaze falling heavy on me. “Soren.” There’s so much authority in his voice that I can’t deny how heavy his next question is. “You went there just for her?”

I can hear the question ringing out behind it, and I gulp. I could lie. I could say that I was looking for the fight, that I didn’t think I would get caught. Maybe a few weeks ago I would have, valuing my reputation too much.

Even if I did, though, I think they would see the lie for what it is. And I honestly don’t have it in me to even pretend like I didn’t go to that farm in a panic to save Evelyn. There is no use in it.

“Yes.” My voice is deep, a soft rumble as I take a step forward until my shoulder is nearly touching hers. “I went back to the farm because I thought she was in danger. In fact–” Holy First I might be an idiot for what I am about to say. “I went back to the farm multiple times after she declined to come with me. I spent my free nights there, and I exposed myself for her, despite the consequences.”

Raziel nods, and without even looking back at her mate, Selene steps forward. Her expression is neutral as she looks from Evelyn to I. “In that case, there will be no repercussions for this.” I see Evelyn look to me, obviously not expecting that. She doesn't know what all that means, though.

But Raziel blows that wide open quickly.

“For a potential mate, we will do damage control. Normally, we’d kill you.” He shrugs, even as Evelyn tenses. “But this time, we’ll send some scouts and see if we can’t clean this up, yeah?”

Selene looks behind her, spotting Marius immediately. I’ve seen him watching me with a damn smirk the whole time. “Marius? Can you take Deverell and Lucien with you through the portal to see how many they are? Be fast before the sun comes up.”

Marius nods, but just as he turns, breaking away from the crowd, Evelyn takes a step forward. “Wait!”

He does, turning toward her with curiosity gleaming in his eyes. I shift closer to her even though I know that Marius would never hurt her. “Yes?”

Evelyn’s eyes bounce between Selene, Raziel, and Marius, but she sucks in a deep breath, hardening her features. When she speaks again, it’s the voice I recognize. The woman in charge who bows to no one.
